Esum first walked into the show ring in January 2001 and took Best of Winners for a 4 pt major. The following weekend in Saratoga, New York he garnered Best of Winners for 2 pts and Winners the next day for 2 pts. He was not shown again until late March and took Best of Winners for 5 pts in Syracuse, New York. Two weekends later Esum finished his championship in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in April 2001.
